Search FAA-designated AMEs by name, city, state, or distance from you. Filter for HIMS-trained AMEs, who evaluate and monitor pilots with substance- or alcohol-related and other mental health conditions when the FAA requires it.

Any AME can handle a routine exam for a healthy pilot, so the closest examiner with an open appointment is usually fine.
Only Senior AMEs can perform first-class exams. Confirm with the AME's office before you book.
If the FAA requires drug or alcohol monitoring, or you take an antidepressant under the Antidepressant Protocol, you need a HIMS AME.

An Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) is a physician, either an MD or a DO, whom the FAA has designated to perform airman medical exams. AMEs are private physicians, not FAA employees. At your exam, the AME can issue, defer, or deny your medical certificate based on the standards in 14 CFR part 67.
Use "Use My Location" in the search above to see AMEs within 25 to 200 miles, or filter by state, city, or name. Designations can change between our monthly refreshes, so confirm the examiner's current status in the FAA Designee Locator before your appointment.
No. Under FAA Order 8000.95D, only Senior AMEs can perform first-class exams; other AMEs perform second- and third-class exams. This directory doesn't show Senior AME status yet, so if you need a first-class medical, confirm it with the AME's office before you book.
A HIMS AME has FAA Human Intervention Motivation Study training in evaluating pilots for substance- or alcohol-related and other mental conditions, and can provide monitoring when the FAA requires it. You need one if the FAA requires drug or alcohol monitoring, or if you take an antidepressant under the FAA's Antidepressant Protocol. See the HIMS AME list by state.
Listings come from the FAA Designee Locator and are refreshed monthly. HIMS status also uses the FAA's published HIMS AME list. The last update was October 2, 2026.
